So here’s everything we’d tell you: what actually photographs well against this particular city, what changes by season, and the handful of practical things that catch people out. Most guides to photoshoot outfits could be about anywhere. This one is about Paris specifically, because Paris has a colour palette, a climate, and a pavement problem all its own.

Start here: the only rule that really matters

Wear something you already love.

Not something bought for the occasion and worn for the first time on a cold morning at Trocadéro. Not something you’re slightly unsure about. The camera is unforgiving about hesitation — if you spend the session adjusting a neckline, that’s what the photographs will show.

The single best predictor of how someone looks in their photos is whether they feel like themselves. Everything below is refinement on top of that.

Colours that work in Paris

Most outfit advice says “wear neutrals” and stops. That’s fine, and it’s not quite the point. The reason certain colours work here is that Paris has a very specific palette, and you’re going to be standing in front of it.

What the city gives you: cream limestone façades. Grey-blue zinc roofs. Black wrought iron. Deep green trees and gardens. Gold — on the bridges, the domes, the gates. Warm café awnings in reds and dark greens.

Colours that sit beautifully against that:

• Cream, camel, oatmeal, soft white
• Navy, dusty blue, slate
• Burgundy, rust, terracotta
• Forest and olive green
• Black — genuinely excellent in Paris, especially against limestone
• Deep emerald and burnt orange in autumn

Colours that fight the background:

• Neon and fluorescent anything, which reflects onto skin and turns faces green
• Pure brilliant white in strong sun, which loses all its detail
• Very bright primaries, which pull the eye away from your face

A note on black: most photographers will tell you to avoid it. In Paris we’d say the opposite. Against pale stone, a black coat is elegant and graphic and enormously flattering. It’s also what Parisians actually wear.

Prints, patterns and logos

Small and subtle work. Large and busy compete with your face and with the city behind you.

Logos are the one we’d be firm about. A visible brand name across a chest is the first thing the eye finds in a photograph, and it dates the image faster than anything else. Your photos from Pont Alexandre III should be timeless. A logo makes them from 2026.

Season by season

Paris changes character four times a year, and your outfit should follow it.

Spring (March–May)

Light layers, and something warmer than you think for early mornings. April is beautiful and unreliable — a trench coat is both practical and the most Parisian thing you can wear. Flowing dresses come alive in spring wind.

Colours: soft pastels, cream, dusty pink, light blue, fresh green.

Summer (June–August)

The most difficult season, not the easiest. Midday light is harsh, so sessions go early or late. Linen breathes. Flowing fabrics photograph beautifully in the low sun of a June evening, when sunset doesn’t arrive until close to ten.

Colours: white and cream work here in soft morning light, plus warm neutrals and blues.

Autumn (September–November)

Our favourite. The Tuileries and Luxembourg Gardens turn gold in late October, and warm tones against that are extraordinary. Knitwear, coats, boots, scarves.

Colours: rust, camel, burgundy, olive, deep brown.

Winter (December–February)

Underrated and quietly the best-kept secret in Paris photography — bare trees, soft light, empty landmarks. Dress properly and it’s wonderful. A good wool coat is the single most photogenic garment you can own.

Colours: black, camel, cream, deep red, forest green.

The winter truth: you will look cold if you are cold. Layer underneath so your coat can come off for a few frames and go straight back on. Nobody photographs well while shivering.

By session type

Couples

Complement, don’t match. If one of you is in green, the other might be either in cream or camel — not navy. Matching outfits blur two people into one shape.

Consider movement: a dress with weight to it moves beautifully when you walk or turn, and walking is most of what we’ll ask you to do.

Families

Choose two or three colours and let everyone draw from them. Not identical outfits — a shared palette. Start with one person’s outfit, usually the hardest to shop for, and build the others around it.

Dress children in things they can actually play in. A child in an uncomfortable outfit will tell you about it for the entire session, and the camera will agree.

Layers help enormously with small children, who are hot, then cold, then hot again.

Solo portraits

This is the session where you can be boldest. One strong colour, one striking silhouette, one coat that makes you feel like the main character. Solo sessions are where a red dress or a beautiful long coat earns its place.

Proposals

The person being proposed to needs to feel unselfconsciously good without knowing why the day matters. So: something they already love and would happily wear to dinner.

For whoever’s doing the proposing — check your pockets. A ring box makes a very obvious rectangle in a fitted jacket, and it’s a detail we’ve watched give the game away more than once. A coat pocket is safer.

Maternity

Fitted through the bump rather than draped over it. Long dresses with movement photograph beautifully, especially in wind by the river. Bring a wrap — early mornings are cold and comfort matters more than usual.

The practical things nobody mentions

Shoes and cobblestones. Paris is paved in uneven stone, and Montmartre is almost entirely stairs and cobbles. Thin heels sink between the stones, and they will genuinely trip you. Wear something you can walk in, bring the heels in a bag, and change for the photographs you want them in. We do this constantly and it works perfectly.

Wind. The Trocadéro esplanade and the Seine bridges are exposed, and there’s usually more wind than you expect. Hair will move — this is often lovely, and we work with it. But a skirt that flies uncontrollably is stressful, and it’s worth knowing before you choose it.

Early mornings are cold, in every season. June at 6 am is not June at 2 pm. Bring a layer even when the forecast says twenty degrees.

Bring a bag for the layer you take off, the shoes you change out of, and the water you’ll want. We’re always happy to carry it out of frame.

Rain. Paris rain is usually light and brief. A good coat and an umbrella turn it into an asset — wet cobbles reflect light beautifully and the landmarks empty out. Here’s our case for shooting in it anyway →

Outfit changes: worth it?

Sometimes. A second outfit gives your gallery genuine variety — one relaxed, one dressed up — and works best on a two-hour session where there’s time to enjoy both.

On a thirty-minute session, we’d usually say no. Changing eats a meaningful part of your time and you’ll get more from staying in one look.

If you do want a change, we bring a private pop-up changing tent so you’re not looking for a café bathroom. It’s included in our two-hour session and available as an add-on otherwise — details on our pricing page.

Hair, makeup and hands

Hair: down and natural photographs beautifully and moves well. If you’re having it styled, ask for something that survives wind, because there will be wind.

Makeup: a little more than you’d normally wear, a little less than you’d wear for an evening out. Matte over dewy if you’re shooting in bright light, since shine reads as shine on camera.

Nails: hands appear constantly in these photographs — held, resting on a shoulder, wearing a new ring. A simple manicure is a small thing that shows up in a surprising number of frames.

If you’d like hair and makeup done, we know artists in Paris who’ll come to your hotel at any hour, including very early. Just ask.

The night before

• Everything laid out, including shoes, layers and the bag
• Anything creased, dealt with — creases photograph
• Ring box moved to a coat pocket, if that applies
• Phone charged, alarm set earlier than feels necessary
• Nothing new, nothing borrowed that doesn’t fit

Where are the most iconic places to propose in Paris?

These are the postcards. They’re busy, they’re beautiful, and with an early enough alarm, every one of them can be nearly empty.

1. Place du Trocadéro

Privacy: ●○○○○ · Best time: at sunrise · Backup nearby: the gardens below

The photograph everyone imagines when they imagine proposing in Paris — the tower straight ahead, the city falling away beneath you. It’s also the busiest place on this list. By nine in the morning, the terrace holds several hundred people, and a proposal there becomes a public event whether you wanted one or not.

Before seven it’s a different world: soft light, perhaps a dozen people, and the whole view to yourselves. If you want Trocadéro, you want it at dawn.

2. Jardins du Trocadéro

Privacy: ●●●○○ · Best time: sunrise · Backup nearby: the riverbank below

The gardens directly beneath the terrace, with fountains, steps and tree-lined paths on either side. Almost empty at the hour when the esplanade above is filling up, and the tower still rises perfectly behind you.

This is where we do most of our best work in this part of the city. If the terrace is busier than you hoped, walk down. You lose nothing.

3. Musée du Louvre

Privacy: ●●○○○ at sunrise · Best time: before the museum opens · Backup nearby: the Cour Carrée

Vast, symmetrical and genuinely imposing, with the glass pyramid set against the palace behind it. Everyone proposes in the main courtyard. Walk east into the Cour Carrée instead — the enclosed square courtyard most visitors pass straight by. Quieter, more intimate, and arguably more beautiful.

4. Pont Alexandre III

Privacy: ●●●○○ at sunrise · Best time: sunrise · Backup nearby: the quays below the bridge

The most ornate bridge in Paris — gilded statues, Art Nouveau lampposts, cherubs — with the golden dome of Invalides framed at one end. The gold catches early light in a way that’s hard to believe until you’ve seen it.

This is our most-requested proposal location, and it’s also the easiest for a photographer to work discreetly, because the bridge is wide enough to stay well back. If you want grandeur, this is it.

5. Champ de Mars

Privacy: ●●●○○ · Best time: sunrise · Backup nearby: the tree-lined edges

The great lawn below the Eiffel Tower. Where Trocadéro gives you a postcard, the Champ de Mars gives you room — space to walk, to sit down, to take your time.

Skip the central lawn, which is the busiest strip and often roped off for maintenance. The tree-lined edges on either side are quieter and considerably more flattering as a backdrop.

Where can I propose in Paris privately?

Proposing in front of a crowd is wonderful for some people and unthinkable for others. If your partner would rather the moment belonged to the two of you, start here.

6. Place Dauphine

Privacy: ●●●●● · Best time: morning · Backup nearby: the tip of the island at Vert-Galant

A quiet triangular square on the Île de la Cité, lined with old façades and chestnut trees, right in the historic heart of the city and almost entirely undiscovered by visitors.

If privacy matters more than landmarks, this is our first suggestion in central Paris. You could propose here at ten in the morning and be almost alone.

7. Passerelle Debilly

Privacy: ●●●●○ · Best time: sunrise · Backup nearby: the riverbank below

The most underrated bridge in Paris. With arches leading your eye straight to the Eiffel Tower. Geometric, dramatic, and far less frequented than Pont Alexandre III or the Bir-Hakeim Bridge — which is exactly why we love it.

The same landmark as Trocadéro, a fraction of the people, and photographs with considerably more character. One of the best spots to propose in Paris, in our honest opinion.

8. The Seine riverbanks

Privacy: ●●●●○ · Best time: sunrise · Backup nearby: any bridge along the way

Down the stone steps to water level: the river on one side, old walls on the other, bridges arching overhead. The city noise disappears entirely down here.

The stretch along the Île Saint-Louis is our favourite — quiet at almost any hour, and the light reflecting off the water is exceptionally kind.

9. A park bench

Privacy: ●●●●○ · Best time: morning · Backup nearby: anywhere else in the same park

Sometimes the simplest option is the right one. Find a bench slightly apart from the path, sit down together, and say what you came to say.

We’ve photographed proposals on benches that were more moving than anything staged on a bridge. If your partner would be mortified by an audience, this is worth considering seriously.

10. Montmartre

Privacy: ●●●○○ at sunrise · Best time: sunrise · Backup nearby: Place Dalida

Cobbled lanes, and ivy, pastel façades. Rue de l’Abreuvoir is the postcard street, and it’s busy by mid-morning; Rue Girardon and Place Dalida a few minutes away are much quieter and just as lovely.

Wear shoes you can walk cobblestones in. This is the neighbourhood where thin heels go to die.

11. A Parisian café

Privacy: ●●●○○ · Best time: mid-morning, between the breakfast and lunch rushes · Backup nearby: the street outside

Take a table on a terrace, order coffee and something from the pastry case, and take the moment when it arrives. Awnings, wicker chairs, the city going about its morning around you.

Unpretentious, deeply Parisian, and easier to organise than anything on this list.

Where should I propose if I want to keep it a total surprise?

If nobody is to know — not your partner, not the people around you — some locations make that far easier than others. What matters is space: enough room for a photographer to work from a real distance without being noticed.

Pont Alexandre III is our first recommendation. It’s wide, it’s long, and there are dozens of plausible places for two people with a camera to stand.

The lower quays of Île Saint-Louis are the private version. Almost nobody is there, sightlines are long, and the moment belongs entirely to you.

The Jardins du Trocadéro work well because there’s cover — trees, fountains, changes of level — and because a photographer among the greenery is invisible against a backdrop of hundreds of tourists above.

Avenue de Camoëns is small, which makes it harder, but the balustrade at the end gives a natural place to stand and a clean line back down the street.

12. A Paris rooftop

Privacy: ●●●●● · Best time: sunset or blue hour · Backup nearby: indoors, if the weather turns

Our favourite unusual proposal in Paris, and one we’ve photographed more than once. The city spread out below, the tower lit in the distance, and nobody else on the roof.

Luxury hotel terraces offer something similar but require more planning and considerably more budget. A private rooftop is more authentic and, done right, more memorable. [See a Paris rooftop proposal we photographed →]

13. The Jules Verne restaurant

Privacy: ●●●○○ · Best time: dinner · Backup nearby: the tower’s own terraces

Proposing inside the most visited monument in the world, with the city twinkling below. Book well in advance — this is not a decision to make the week of your trip.

14. A private cruise on the Seine

Privacy: ●●●●● · Best time: sunset · Backup nearby: none, so book carefully

The city from the water, moving slowly past everything you came to see. Intimate, unhurried, and completely yours if you’ve booked privately rather than joining a public boat.

15. Serres d’Auteuil

Privacy: ●●●●○ · Best time: morning · Backup nearby: the surrounding gardens

A botanical garden with tropical glasshouses dating back to 1761, on the western edge of the city. Warm, green and quiet, and one of the few genuinely beautiful indoor options in Paris.

Worth knowing for winter proposals, and for anyone who’d rather not gamble on weather

16. A château near Paris

Privacy: ●●●○○ · Best time: morning, before the coaches arrive · Backup nearby: the gardens

Versailles and Sceaux both make extraordinary backdrops, and both are a train ride out of the city. Versailles is busier and grander; Sceaux is quieter and, for a proposal, probably the better of the two.

Check opening hours and photography policies before you plan around either.

17. A hotel terrace

Privacy: ●●●●○ · Best time: sunset · Backup nearby: indoors

Several Parisian hotels have terraces with extraordinary views — the Shangri-La and the Peninsula among them. Privacy and a landmark view in one place, at a price.

Speak to the hotel directly. Most are used to this and some will help you plan it.

Which Paris parks and gardens are best for proposing?

Green, quiet, and forgiving — if it’s busy where you’re standing, you simply walk fifty meters.

18. Parc Monceau

Privacy: ●●●●○ · Best time: morning · Backup nearby: anywhere in the park

An elegant residential park in the 8th, with a curved colonnade around a small lake, enormous old trees and a domed rotunda at the gate. Parisians bring their children here. Visitors rarely find it.

In a city where most locations demand an early alarm, Monceau is genuinely pleasant at nine or ten in the morning.

19. Jardin du Luxembourg

Privacy: ●●●○○ · Best time: as the gates open · Backup nearby: the Medici Fountain

The most beloved park in Paris: the palace, the octagonal pond, long avenues of trees. Tucked into a shaded corner is the Medici Fountain, dark and green and completely transporting.

The fountain is the more private option and photographs beautifully on an overcast morning.

20. Jardin des Tuileries

Privacy: ●●●○○ · Best time: sunrise, or the golden hour before sunset · Backup nearby: the side allées

Jerry, all the way from vibrant Singapore, reached out to us with a burning desire to create the perfect proposal experience. It all started a few years ago in the west London suburbs when Kathryn showed Peter an apartment to rent. Sparks flew but little did Kathryn know that Peter was head-over-heels in love with her. Kathryn, on the other hand, found him very nice but thought he was gay! Talk about a plot twist! But as fate would have it, Peter mustered the courage to confess his feelings to Kathryn, and the rest is history.

Fast forward a few years, and Peter knew he wanted to make the ultimate commitment to Kathryn. That’s how he started to plan a lovely surprise proposal in Paris.

Peter’s Paris surprise Proposal

Each day he will give a handwritten letter to Kathryn with a riddle about the activity they were going to do that day. Each letter is connected, so the last would be the one where he confesses to her that he wants to continue the rest of his life by her side.

We found this idea incredibly romantic and couldn’t wait to see it happen!

So on D-day, Peter gave a letter to Kathryn indicating that they were going on a romantic cruise later in the morning. This is where we come in!

A few hours later, we positioned ourselves by the Seine’s shores and waited for the couple to show up. We stationed ourselves discreetly, feigning to anticipate the arrival of the cruise ship too.

As they gazed at the Eiffel Tower and awaited the (non-existent) boat, Peter chose that moment to present Kathryn with the final envelope. Inside, he had written a heartfelt confession of his feelings and requested that she turn and look at him when she finishes reading. This was the perfect opportunity for his romantic surprise proposal in Paris.

We started taking pictures discreetly until Kathryn turned around and saw Peter kneeling with a beautiful engagement ring, asking for her hand.

The emotion was too strong for Kathryn, who could not hold back her tears.

When Sergio contacted us a few weeks ago, he had one mission in mind – to plan the most romantic marriage proposal for Aranxa, the love of his life. He wanted something out of the ordinary – a Paris rooftop proposal!
