If you have read our blog “why should you do an engagement session?” You may have been convinced of the benefits of planning an engagement session before your wedding day. Today we offer you some tips for your couple photo session that will help you get beautiful images, even if you are not comfortable in front of the camera (we know this feeling too well!).
It’s true that usually being in front of a stranger who takes pictures of you kissing your partner is not something we do every day.
But you’ll see, getting your picture taken doesn’t have to be awkward and can be a lot of fun. If you apply these few tips you will inevitably feel more prepared and at ease, and that is the first step to get beautiful photos!
1. Time of the day
Have you ever heard about the “Golden Hour”?
It’s that time of the day when the sun has just risen or just a few minutes before sunset.
These two times of the day are when you will get the most beautiful photos simply because the light is AMAZING.
If you can, try to plan your couple session at one of these two times of the day, you are bound to see the difference in your photos.
2. The place
Our second tips for your couple photo session, the location! The place of your session should be a place that suits you both and that matches your personalities.
If you don’t like the beach, you’re not going to take your pictures there. Likewise, if you prefer wild landscapes, you’ll want to avoid a session in town.
Make a list of your favorite places, and decide how far you are willing to go geographically. If you really don’t know, ask your photographer! He should be able to offer you a place that suits you.
3. Your clothes
As with the location, you’ll want to feel comfortable, so take clothes that you would actually wear.
The most important thing is that you feel comfortable, and that’s only the case when you’re wearing something you like. Of course, colors and materials are important.
Try as much as possible to wear neutral colors. By neutral, we don’t just mean white and gray. Just avoid colors that are too flashy, and big patterns/logos that would distract from the most important thing: you!
Try to match each other by using the same color palette, but be careful, don’t wear the same clothes! Only similar or complementary colors that will bring you closer as a subject in the photos. Again, your photographer should be able to help.
We also suggest that you bring another outfit if possible, so you can have more diverse photos.

4. Communication
Communication is a big part of a successful photo shoot! Discuss with your photographer what you would like to do.
If you already have some pose ideas or a photo you want to recreate, talk to your photographer and send him an example (Instagram and Pinterest are great for that).
It will be easier for him when he knows what you expect from the shoot and neither of you will be disappointed.
Plus, spending time chatting together will make you more comfortable for the big day.
5. Remember to have fun
Surely the most important tip of all! If you apply all the previous advice but you don’t have fun, believe us, there is little chance that you will get the photos you dream of.
As we told you at the beginning of this blog, having your picture taken should not be an awkward moment. Consider this moment as a privileged moment for two. A time when you can do whatever you want.
Of course, it is also largely the job of the photographer to do his best to make you feel comfortable. We, for example, love to play some little games to get natural photos and make our couples forget that we were there to take pictures of them. Others play music… Each photographer has his own method!
By applying these tips for your couple photo session, we promise you that you will be much less stressed, more comfortable and that you will inevitably get beautiful images.
But don’t forget the most important thing, have fun, enjoy the moment and don’t take yourself seriously for a few minutes. Life is serious enough as it is 🙂
