Paris Photoshoot in the Rain: Why We Hope for Bad Weather

Table of Contents

Here is something we’ve never quite managed to convince people of in advance, and which almost every client tells us afterwards: the Paris photoshoot in the rain produces the best photographs.

Not sometimes. Not as a consolation. Reliably, and by a margin that surprises us as much as anyone.

If you’re reading this three days before your session with a weather app open in another tab, this is what we’d tell you on the phone.

It empties the city. This is the big one, and it’s difficult to overstate. The Trocadéro esplanade on a wet Tuesday morning holds perhaps a dozen people. The same spot in June sunshine holds several hundred. Rain gives you Paris nearly to yourself — the thing every visitor wants and almost nobody gets.

It makes the ground reflective. Wet cobblestones and wet stone catch every light in the city and throw it back up at you. Streetlamps, café windows, the tower, headlights — the pavement doubles them all. Dry Paris has one of everything. Wet Paris has two.

The light becomes soft and even. Overcast skies work like an enormous diffuser. No harsh shadows, no squinting, no unflattering midday contrast. It’s the light portrait photographers build studios to imitate.

It gives you something to do. Half the awkwardness of a photoshoot comes from standing still, wondering where to put your hands. Rain solves it. You’re under an umbrella together, running for an awning, laughing at how wet you are. People stop performing and start reacting, and the photographs change completely.

Colours deepen. Wet stone goes warm and rich. Trees saturate. The whole city looks like a better version of itself.

We’re not going to pretend it’s all upside.

Your hair will not stay as you arranged it. Some outfits are harder in rain than others. If you had a specific photograph in mind (the one you saw on Pinterest, in that light, at that spot), the weather may not give you exactly that.

And genuinely heavy rain, the kind that comes sideways and doesn’t stop, is not fun for anyone. That’s rare in Paris, but it happens.

What we’d say is this: the trade you’re making is a small loss of control over the images you imagined, in exchange for images you couldn’t have planned. Most people find that a good trade once they see the gallery. Almost nobody finds it out beforehand.

We don’t improvise this. We have a set of locations we move to specifically for wet weather, most of them covered, all of them beautiful.

The Rue de Rivoli and the Louvre Museum arcades. A long colonnade running beside the Louvre — repeating arches, deep shade, warm reflected light, and a roof. One of our first calls, and it puts you in the middle of the city rather than hiding from it. (Part of Route 3.)

Bir Hakeim Bridge. Beautiful symmetry, stunning Eiffel Tower views, and an unmatched setting you saw in many Paris movies.

Café terraces. Awnings, warm light spilling out, condensation on the windows, two people with coffee watching the rain. Some of the most atmospheric photographs we take all year happen here. (The heart of Route 1.)

Pont Alexandre III. The gold catches the grey extraordinarily well, and the bridge is wide, dramatic and almost empty in rain.

Trocadéro. Yes, really. This is the one day you might have it to yourself, and the wet esplanade reflects the tower.

The Seine quays. Water above and below, bridges arching overhead, umbrellas along the riverbank.

Montmartre. Wet cobbles, ivy dripping, the whole village looking like a painting. Steep and slippery, so sensible shoes matter more than usual — but worth it.

Most of our usual outfit guidance still applies. A few additions:

A good coat is the answer to almost everything. A well-cut trench or wool coat is both practical and the most Parisian thing you can wear. Rain makes it look better, not worse.

Bring an umbrella, ideally a plain one. Black, cream, or a solid colour. It becomes a prop — framing your faces, catching light, giving you both something to hold. Avoid transparent plastic and avoid logos.

Boots. Wet cobblestones and thin heels are a genuinely bad combination, and Montmartre in the rain is not the place to discover it.

Let your hair be what it wants to be. Elaborate styling and rain are at odds. Something that survives weather looks better than something losing a battle with it.

Darker colours photograph beautifully in rain, and pale ones can go translucent when wet. Worth knowing before you choose.

Shoot anyway. Our honest recommendation, and what most of our clients end up doing, but you really need to embrace it. We’ll adjust the route toward covered locations and the ones that improve in wet weather, and we’ll keep moving.

Shift by an hour or two. Paris rain is usually passing rather than permanent. If the forecast shows a clear window later in the day, we’ll often just move the start time and everything else stays as planned.

Reschedule, free of charge. If the forecast is genuinely miserable, or if you’d simply rather not, we’ll move your session at no cost. No fee, no argument. We’d just gently ask you to read this page first.

Cancel. If we’re not able to provide you with another time/date during your stay, you will be fully refunded. Full terms on our pricing page.

We won’t push you into shooting in weather you don’t want. But we will tell you honestly what we think, because we’d rather you had the gallery than the sunshine.

Paris photoshoot in the rain at the Louvre pyramid

We started paying attention to this a few years ago, and it changed how we talk about weather.

When clients tell us which photographs went on the wall, or into the album, or onto the Christmas card — a disproportionate number come from the difficult mornings. The wet ones, the grey ones, the ones where something went sideways.

Our theory is that it’s not really about the light. It’s that when the weather is uncooperative, people stop trying to look like the photograph they had in mind and start actually being together. Two people under one umbrella, laughing at how ridiculous this is, are not posing. And that’s visible in a way that no amount of good light can fake.

The perfect golden morning gives you a beautiful photograph of two people who look lovely. The rainy one gives you a photograph of two people who were actually there.

  • What happens if it rains during my Paris photoshoot?

Your session goes ahead unless you’d rather it didn’t. We move toward covered locations and spots that improve in wet weather. If you prefer, we’ll reschedule free of charge or shift the start time to catch a clear window.
  • Do you cancel photoshoots because of rain?

No. Rescheduling is always available at no cost, but Paris rain is usually brief and rarely a reason to lose your session.
  • Are rainy day photos in Paris actually good?

Yes — reflective ground, soft even light, deep colour and far fewer people. Many of our clients’ favourite images come from wet mornings.
  • Where can you take photos in Paris when it’s raining?

The Rue de Rivoli arcades, Bir Hakeim Bridge, and café terraces are all covered and beautiful. Pont Alexandre III, the Seine quays and Montmartre are all worth being out in.
  • What should I wear for a photoshoot in the rain in Paris?

A good coat, boots you can walk cobblestones in, and a plain umbrella. Darker colours photograph better when wet than pale ones.
  • Should I reschedule my Paris photoshoot if rain is forecast?

Usually not. Forecasts change constantly in Paris, and rain tends to pass. We’d suggest keeping your date and deciding on the day before (we’re always happy to talk it through).

We shoot in every season and most weather, and we’ve never once finished a rainy session wishing we’d cancelled.
